Meet Our Coaches

Eryn Morrison - Coach

My name is Eryn and I love being active! In 2015, I found CrossFit and shortly thereafter, Olympic weightlifting. I have grown to love the sense of community, the positive atmosphere, and the stellar coaching staff here at CrossFit Viroqua. In these few short years, I’ve learned so much about functional movements and how applicable and necessary it is in our daily life. I want nothing more than to give back to these people I’ve grown to love here, and that is why I coach CrossFit.

I am happily married to my best friend, Cody and I’m a hardcore Wisconsinite who loves her cheese (specifically mac and cheese!). Along with being a coach, I am a registered nurse.

My goal in life is to be the best me I can be while helping others do the same. I want to encourage people, challenge them, and make them stronger in all areas of their lives. Health is one way to start! Strong is beautiful.

Luke Sellers - Coach

Hello, my name is Luke Sellers and have been involved in CrossFit since 2013. Coming from a Bodybuilding background diving into CrossFit training with Head Coach Josh Brown back in 2013 was what I had been searching for since competitive sports throughout my high school career. Not only is it an incredible amount of fun, but the most humbling sport I have ever been around. I received my CF-L1 in June of 2014 in Chicago, IL and have been coaching at CrossFit Viroqua since. I have since gone through the “Mobility” Specialty Course and “Weightlifting” Specialty Course to better myself as well as our CrossFit family.

My full time profession however, is in Law Enforcement. I am currently a Patrol Sergeant with the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office. I grew up in Madison, WI and accepted a position with the Sheriff’s Office in February of 2010 and have been here in Viroqua ever since!

CrossFit Viroqua is the best place and only place to be and I look forward to meeting each and every one of you that come through our door!

Hobbies/Interests: CrossFit, Football/Basketball/Baseball, being able to be active with my wife and kids, Reading, Boating, Camping, Country Music (CrossFit Viroqua will say I like Backstreet Boys, that is not true!), Spending time with Family and Friends.

Josh Brown - Coach

I grew up in the country working on a dairy farm.  I learned from a young age that it takes a lot of hard work to achieve your goals, but when you do it with family and friends, it is so much more enjoyable, one of the reason that I love CrossFit.  I have been active my whole life starting wrestling in second grade, football in high school, and pole vaulted in college.  I went to Central College in Pella, IA where I graduated with bachelors degree in Exercise Science.  After college I got a job as a personal trainer with the VMH Wellness Center and had the great opportunity to grow an amazing following which allowed me to start CrossFit Viroqua in 2014.  I am also a Lieutenant on the Viroqua Fire Department.

Hobbies/Interests: I love reading and continually learning something new to help out others.  I still love to do field work on the home farm and spend time with my family and amazing wife Morgan!

Certifications:  I have a bachelors degree in Exercise Science, CrossFit Level 2, CrossFit Mobility, CrossFit Kids, CrossFit Weightlifting, CrossFit Judges Course, CrossFit Scaling Course, and CPR-AED

Ian Aspenson - Coach

Hi, My name is Ian Aspenson and I’ve been in CrossFit since 2012. Here is a little bit of my fitness journey.

Right out of high school I moved to Milwaukee and I got sucked into buying a 3 year Bally’s total fitness membership, that I used 3 times.  I didn’t like that they were always overcrowded and I had no sense of direction or motivation.

I moved to Detroit (where I married Hannah) and had similar results.  Hannah would run and I would play video games. I never found anything that would keep me motivated to get healthy.

I was on YouTube one night and someone posted a challenge of 100 burpees for time, I watched the video and thought I could do better.  After a few more fitness challenge videos I found CrossFit.

CrossFit ignited my competitive side to fuel my fitness. For the next three years with some sketchy homemade equipment, I did CrossFit in my basement and garage following CrossFit Invictus programming.

Not until joining CrossFit Viroqua in 2015 did I understand that I was missing the power of having a community around me. I love the fact that I now have the opportunity to give back to the community through coaching.

I have a passion for this and I hope it shows when I coach. I work in agriculture and live in Viroqua with my beautiful wife and 3 kids.

Hobbies and interest. CrossFit, getting in the bro reps, archery, barn restoration and the Packers get too much of my attention.

I am a Senior at 70+ years old and I go to CrossFit Viroqua 4 times a week.  I have been a lifelong participant in exercise.  I joined CrossFit Viroqua when it began at the Wellness Center, but you can begin/join anytime.  The coaches work with everyone on proper form for whatever we might be doing.

There is always a warmup time to prepare us for the workout of the day.

I am delighted to participate.  Improvement in balance, strength, endurance and mental fitness are just a few of the benefits that come with this activity.  We learn assorted skills with the proper techniques to avoid injury, here at the gym and for use in your life outside of the gym.  Various workouts include – weight lifting, jumping rope, push-ups, sit-ups, rowing, pull-ups, running/walking – all at a skill level that works for YOU.

We are challenged to improve, but we work at a pace that our ability allows.  I am very proud to be a part of this community and am inspired by the young adults in our community that are taking care of their health, now, versus later in life.  We are an enlightening, enjoyable group to be with!

“What the heck is CrossFit and why are these people messing around with PVC pipes all the time?”  That was me six months ago.  I couldn’t understand why all these people looked like they were ready to pass out when they were done working out but had smiles on their faces and kept going back day after day.  After some persuasion, alright a lot of persuasion, I decided that I would sign up for Foundations but that was ALL I was going to do.  “I don’t have time for this, I’m not spending money on this and there is no way I am changing my diet when I have a family at home to feed and I work full time.”  At this point I couldn’t do a pull up, I doubt I could run 400 meters without having to stop and there was absolutely no way I was able to lift my toes to no bar.  Well that month of foundations turned in to another month of workouts and then that month turned in to three and now six months later here I am in the best shape of my life and eating healthier than I ever have.  I’m able to do multiple pull ups, run more than a mile at a time and yes, even get my toes to the bar!  I have to admit, I still have my villains (the dreadful wall balls) but now I look forward to the challenge.  I can’t wait to do better than I did last time or be able to do something I’ve never done before.

Through the years I have tried different exercise routines and none of them kept my interest very long.  Soon I would find an excuse to miss and then eventually just stop going completely.  I knew I was hooked on CrossFit when I started turning down lunch dates and getting up early to make it in for the workout.  The coaches and fellow CrossFitters are there to support you along the way.  I will never forget the day we had to do 300 double unders.  I was determined that I was going to do all double unders even if I had to do one at a time.  I was by far the last person to finish the workout that day but ever person stayed to cheer me on until I completed my task.

Now I can honestly say I make the time and look forward to it, the money is well worth it and it is doable with a family.  My advice to you is to stop making excuses!  Stop being envious of others and make them envious of you.  Only you can make the difference in your own life.  Its more than just about losing weight… it’s about a lifestyle change, for the better.  I promise you will get out of it what you put in to it and will be a stronger individual both physically and mentally.  Come try it out, face your villains and join our family.

If you made a list of all the ill-conceived notions about CrossFit; I, at one time or another, would have subscribed to all of them.  Before I signed up for CrossFit, I assumed that CrossFit was a, ultra-competitive, military boot camp style class for “muscle heads” and “alpha” type personalities where how much you could lift was the only thing that was important, with form and teamwork taking a back seat.  I thought one needed to already be in amazing shape just to show up to the classes, let alone complete them.  Having completed the month long CrossFit Viroqua Foundation course and participated in the regular CrossFit Viroqua classes for a month, I can say without reservation that CrossFit is an amazing program that approaches fitness in a total body mentality and provides an amazing opportunity to reach great personal heights in ones personal fitness.

After my first foundation class, I realized all my preconceived ideas about CrossFit were completely false.  Most importantly the Foundation class prepares you by focusing on form and function.  The Foundation class does an amazing job of teaching you form and technique so that when you enter the regular classes you can safely complete that day’s workout.  The Foundation class not only teaches the necessary form to participate in the regular classes, but it also teaches you the form and technique for normal everyday activities of daily life such as squatting, lifting, walking, running, etc.  I also discovered quickly during the Foundation course that CrossFit fosters a team approach where participants encourage each other to do their best.  For every ounce, of what may seem like competitiveness, CrossFit Viroqua has a hundred pounds worth of teamwork.  That aspect was probably one of the most pleasantly surprising elements of CrossFit.

In my personal and professional opinion no matter what exercise program you subscribe to, it is only as strong, safe, and effective as the instructor teaching it.  This factor is where CrossFit Viroqua shines above any program I have ever been involved with or participated in.  Josh Brown, lead CrossFit Viroqua instructor, is a master of his craft.  You can easily see that Josh has dedicated his life to researching, developing, and implementing fitness techniques that can help people reach their fitness goals.  Josh is an amazing instructor and has the ability to not only teach the necessary skills but the know how to make adjustments to each participants individual needs.

CrossFit has put me on the path to being in the best personal shape of my life.  CrossFit Viroqua is a place for all levels of athleticism, young or seasoned, male or female, experienced or new comer, CrossFit Viroqua will provide you with the opportunity to reach your personal fitness goals.

I started my journey around 3 years ago at the VMH Wellness Center with Josh Brown. When I walked through the doors at 112 pounds – skinny but not strong – I couldn’t even complete 1 push up. After three years of hard, physically and mentally, intense workouts I can now do hand stand push ups, I continue to hit PRs (Personal Records) on lifts I never thought possible, and I am now stronger than I have ever been in my entire life! Strong is beautiful! As workouts progress, I find myself much more concerned with the weight on the bar: dead lifts, squats, and push presses, than the weight on the scale.

CrossFit has not only helped me get into the best physical shape of my life, but into the best mental shape of my life as well. CrossFit has made me believe in myself; it challenges me, inspires me, and motivates me to be better than I was yesterday. The words “I can’t do that” are words never to be spoken during a workout- “can’t” puts limits on ourselves, and everyone who shows up each day, regardless of age, gender, or activity level- Prove WE CAN! CrossFit has and continues to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life! Every workout brings a new challenge, and overcoming challenges makes us stronger…. Bring on the pull-ups!

Dedication. Consistency.

Two things I have always struggled to maintain with exercise. Dedication and consistency. Exercise and personal wellness has always been an on/off situation for me. I’ve completed multiple 60-90 day at home DVD programs, ran 2 marathons, and joined multiple gyms. I saw results but never found anything that kept me coming back, nothing that hooked me or held my interest for long. At the end of each program or after the race I resorted back to eating unhealthy and not exercising. It started as a reward and break to recover but would continue on for months. As a result my weight and body fat percentage fluctuated throughout the year, hardly a healthy and satisfying way to live.

January 2015 I joined the CrossFit Viroqua Foundations Class. At the time, I thought I would get through Foundations and maybe stick with the class on a part time basis. Run a couple days a week and do CrossFit a couple as well. It would be a great way to keep exercise fresh and interesting. After Foundations, I began to see minor changes in my appearance, but that isn’t really what Foundations is meant to do. As the name implies, it gave me the foundation, the starting point, to do exercises with the correct form and technique in both the class setting and on my own. It also gave me the kick start to change my diet. Put simply, it laid the foundation for the real changes to come. I am now five months in and I am seeing great results. I have added muscle mass throughout my body while also burning off fat, fat from years of ice cream and peanut butter cups. Best of all, I feel better. I have more energy throughout the day and feel healthy. I didn’t stick with doing CrossFit a couple days a week as planned – I do it 5 days a week. I enjoy it too much not to.

Sunday afternoon rolls around each week and I start to feel an itch. It is time to get back to CrossFit. It is not just the exercise and the good feelings that it brings. It is the class setting – the camaraderie. I look forward to sweating next to the same people each day. I look forward to pushing myself further than I thought I could handle. I look forward to the person next to me doing to same. I look forward to my workout partners picking me up when I’m down. I pick them up when I have to although I don’t look forward to that. I look forward to what is to come. I look forward to CrossFit.

My only regret is I waited to start CrossFit. I wavered on if it was right for me. I was nervous if I could handle it or not. What I’ve found is I could and truthfully, anyone can handle it. The CrossFit Viroqua coaches do a great job at scaling every workout to the needs of each individual. Unfortunately, my time with CrossFit Viroqua is short. I’m moving to Germany soon. I have been scouting out the different CrossFit boxes that will be close. Once I get there I will visit each one to find the best fit for me, a fit just like CrossFit Viroqua. I think I finally found dedication and consistency to exercise.

I am so happy being part of something that is life changing, and filled with positive, supportive, fun people! In the beginning I was intimidated by CrossFit. I remember thinking, “I don’t want to look like a dude, and I can’t lift these heavy weights.” Everything I thought about CrossFit was proven wrong shortly after I joined. The encouragement that you get from other CrossFitters is overwhelming. There are no big egos, and nobody making you feel like you don’t belong. I always made workouts part of my daily routine, but never really loved doing it. Once I started CrossFit, working out didn’t feel like working out anymore. It soon became something that I looked forward to.  I think one of the things that I enjoy most about CrossFit is having direction in the workouts. It was always so easy for me to come to the gym and not push myself hard enough. This never happens now. Every day I am encouraged to push myself more and more, safely. At first, the only thing that I was looking to achieve from CrossFit was losing weight. Now my goals have shifted. Even though I have reached my weight loss goal, I realized that I also want to be stronger, healthier, and I want to have muscle definition. The day I conquered a pull up was more rewarding for me than any number I’ve seen after stepping on a scale!

Kristi Peterson

My niece was training with Josh and invited me to workout with her one day. She knew I would love CrossFit, but it took some convincing to get me to join, but once I did, I was hooked. I love doing something different every day and I have learned to appreciate weightlifting, as it was something I had never done before.

I was not a healthy person in my younger years. I was overweight, I drank, I smoked, I had unhealthy relationships and I partied pretty much every weekend. Exercise consisted mostly of volleyball (at the bar) and walking the dog. Honestly, I had A LOT of fun and have few regrets but I knew changes had to be made. I joined Weight Watchers, started exercising and lost 25 pounds. I ended up working for Weight Watchers for the next 10 years. However, it was CrossFit that truly changed my mindset from wanting to be “skinny” to being “strong” which was a huge victory for me considering I had been a conditioned “scale watcher” all those years. Eventually even WW got on board with the fact that it is not all about the number on the scale and tool a more holistic approach (so, do not let the scale steal happiness)!!

It’s the friends/people and coaches that keep me coming back and being accountable!
